HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Here are our 3 Stars for a fun and exciting day!

1. In math today we worked on our addition skills. We had to find as many addition equations as possible that added up to our mystery number.

2.  We also did a colour by number activity. We had to solve math equations and then colour in the correct colour. Our mystery picture was a Jack o Lantern!

3. Of course it was Halloween, so our favourite part of the day was seeing everyone's amazing costumes!!! We also had the kindergarten students come through our room! They looked great and were so excited!

TWAS for the Week of October 24-28, 2016

Hi Families of Room 73

Here is what we did This Week at School

We finished our Monster Writing and Monster Math. On Monday we will get to play the guessing game and figure out who's monster is who's.

This week we had our first Book Fair this year!

We had an Earth Rangers Assembly! We saw a Red Tailed Hawk, Pine Marten, Porcupine, and Peregrine Falcon.

Math Night was definitely one of our highlights this week. It was so great to see everyone interested and excited about Math!

We did Coding with Mrs. Handelsman. This was another exciting point in our week! Students are able to log in to the coding website at home. The link is on the Cranston Website.

The Halloween Howler was last night and we had a blast!

Club Friday was today! Students participated in a variety of activities all over the school! It was SO MUCH FUN

Today we had our first spelling test! Students will receive new words on Monday

Show, Don't Tell Acting: this was a great way for students to express emotions through only actions, no words. We had to guess each emotion, it was hilarious!

We had a lesson about Homophones and learned that NO, they are not home phones....but in fact words that sound the same but have a different spelling and meaning.

In gym we practiced Dribbling, played Pirates, and practiced passing the ball to each other. we also practiced trapping the ball.

In Music, we learned a new song called Having a Bad Scare Day.

In Social Studies, we continued to work on our country projects.

In science we played a game called What Sound is That? We heard sounds normally, then heard them as if we had hearing loss. You could tell the difference right away, some of the sounds we couldn't even figure out. We learned that it is very important to protect your ears at all costs!

REMINDERS
Monday is Halloween! Students CAN wear their costumes but for the AFTERNOON ONLY. If they want to wear it, please send their costume with them. It has to be able to fit over their clothing and they have to be able to put it on themselves. No weapons or masks which cover their entire faces can be worn while at school.

Have a SPOOKY weekend!

2. Today in Social we continued to work on our Google Slides projects. We added "Map" to our slides. We also got to share with the class the progress we have made.

3. In Math we learned all about ordering numbers from least to greatest. We had six stations with numbers all the way up to 10, 000! It was tricky, but we worked in groups and found solutions.

***Today we did a practice spelling test in preparation for tomorrow's real spelling test. These practice ones were sent home.

Happy Wednesday Everybody!

Here are our 3 Stars of the Day!

1. Today in Social Studies we started our research projects! Students were put into groups based on the countries they chose to study. It was great to see how excited everyone was to begin research and learn about google presentations!

GOOGLE ACCOUNTS
Every student also logged into their Google Drive account-this is where you'll find google docs and google presentations. Every student was given their username to log in. Their passwords are the SAME as their school computer log in (they should all know this). It is their Name (with a capital) followed by the LAST 4 digits of their student ID. i.e. Sam6789
We will be working on this project often in class so the students will be experts in presentations before we know it!

***The students are informed that they are NOT allowed to work on their country presentations at home. This is because they are group projects and we need them to collaborate IN class to complete them. They CAN however show you their progress so far and are free to create individual presentations/documents about topics of their choosing.

Students are encouraged to share anything they do on google docs with me, so that I can give them feedback and see what they are working on.
To do this select "Share" then enter raoverdevest@educbe.ca.

2. Today we had music with Mrs. McBride and had a great time!

Monday, October 17, 2016

Good Afternoon!

Today we had quite the busy day! Here are our 3 Stars:

1. In science we used and interactive website called "Dangerous Decibels" where we learned what sounds can damage our ears. The whole class was really into this and loved making predictions about whether or not an object could damage your hearing. By request of the students here is the link!

http://www.dangerousdecibels.org/virtualexhibit/3howloudistooloud.html

2. Today we worked more on our Monster Descriptive Writing! The students are working hard to have these ready for you to see on Math Night!

3. Today we did our first Spelling Sort. The students were put into colour groups (orange, blue, green, or yellow) and were given words to sort out based on sound and pattern. Every student has a copy of these words at school AND one to take home (check backpacks/blue folders).

Students will be tested on these words every TWO weeks, meaning that our first test will be October 28.
The sorts contain three to four categories to which the words need to be sorted.
i.e. In a category labelled CVC, you want to look for words that have consonant, vowel, constants within them.

Furthermore you also want to listen for either a long or short vowel sound. Categories where the vowel is marked with a small curve above them represent short sounds, whereas vowels that have a straight line above them represent a long vowel sound.

It helps to have the students say the words out loud and think about what letters are being pronounced.

If you would like to volunteer to help out with testing, or have any questions please email me at raoverdevest@cbe.ab.ca

REMINDERS

Friday, 30 September 2016

Hello Everyone and Happy Friday!

Our first month of school is behind us and we are excited for what comes next!

This week at school, we focused on Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope. To prepare for the big run, we practiced by running laps in the field. Each lap we did, we got a popsicle stick. We then used these sticks to count how many laps, both as a table and as a class, we were able to run. Once our data was collected we recorded these numbers on a graph. It was hard work but the cause was worth it. The big run was held on Thursday afternoon and we ran all the way to the windmill and back.

This week we were also able to access mathletics and we also got to do some fun math stations!

In music we learned two new songs, "I Gotta Autumn-ish Feeling" and The Terry Fox song, which we sang as a school before beginning our run. Next month we will begin learning how to play precorders and xylophones.

In LA we worked on storytelling and writing. We got to make up stories and act them out in front of the class, we all had quite a laugh at the silly and creative stories. We also used Terry Fox's story and related it to our circle of courage. We will continue our story writing next week.

In gym this week we have our second inline skating lesson! They taught us how to go backwards on our skates, which was really hard, but we enjoyed the challenge. On Monday in gym we learned how to play kickball and a new tag game called, Fishy's in the Sea.

We are also sad but excited that Mrs. McArthur is leaving our room to go to Grade1/2, but we now have Ms. Overdevest as our teacher!

Important Notices
Starting next week, the students will be eating lunch in our regular classroom.

Sincerely,
Room 73

Thursday, 22 September 2016

Hello Everyone,

We hope you're all enjoying a wonderful end of summer, and start up of fall.

Here is our TWAS for the week of September 19 - September 22; we can't believe we're at the end already!!

Again, it's been a very busy week around Cranston school.  Yesterday we celebrated national Peace Day with the entire school standing out back in a Peace symbol formation, singing peace songs, while pinwheels that the children created blew in the wind.  It was beautiful . . .

One of our students introduced us to an excellent kindness video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwAYpLVyeFU This started us off on some great discussions about kindness, empathy and peace.

We watched a powerful video about Terry Fox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1QOtPDAAeY
The children were inspired by his story and threw themselves into our practice run, doing much more than was required of them.

We had our fist in-line skating on Tuesday.  It was a lot of fun; everyone tried their best and the teacher couldn't believe what an athletic and agile group we had. A huge thank you to Ms. Bouman who volunteered with us!

As for the rest of our days: we worked on reading; word work; writing, surveys and graphing; started science with a look at the ear; our first library was this week; began using dictionaries; eye openers; riddles; group/team works; enjoyed our first fun lunch (thank you parent volunteers for making this possible); Dogo news; learned about Walk a Mile in Her Shoes (thanks dads who participated)!!. . . and a million other little things that made our week fly by.  A big congratulations to our last week's Random Act of Kindness winner!

Just a reminder that our open house is this evening from 6:30 - 7:30; I really look forward to meeting everyone who is able to come out this evening. As for everyone else, I look forward to meeting you when you have an opportunity.

Thank you also to the parents who are setting up future volunteer times.  We're so excited to have you join us whenever you can.

All the best; we wish you all a spectacular weekend!

Sincerely,

Team 73

Friday, 16 September 2016

Hello families of Room 73,

Here is our TWAS for the week of September 12 - September 16:

Our week flew by!  We started with a 'kick off' assembly where the children were introduced to all of the teachers and administration, we read our school book about peace and the children learned about the entertainment books that went home.  Our class has continued to centre around the Circle of Courage philosophy and the children are becoming real experts.  Ask them about the four quadrants and they'll be able to share the amazing ways that they demonstrate, and work towards strengthening, these qualities regularly.

Some of the other things we worked on/learned about this week:  graphing, math problems, what is a 'Canadian,' paralympics, computers/Raz kids (login information went home with them for out-of-school practice), daily 5 writing, word work, story connections/writing, guided reading and poetry.

We had our first fire drill this week and the students did an amazing job!! There are so many reasons to be proud of them.  This is such a kind, considerate and thoughtful group.  We are so enjoying our time together.

Just a reminder that we start inline skating next week, Tuesday September 20th, so if your child has his/her own helmet, please send it along on that day.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend; thanks for reading,

BTW it's Beakerhead in Calgary "A smash up of art, science and engineering" — lots of amazing events and free things for families to do.  Today on Stephen Avenue between 4 and 6pm is a whirlwind of fun Beakerhead activities!

Dear families of Cranston School, Room 73,

We hope that you had a good week. We have had a very busy week here in room 73.  We have decided to write you a letter, that we call TWAS (this week at school), each Friday to let you know some of the things that we have been up to each week.  This is our TWAS for the week of September 6th - September 9th, 2016.

This week we learned how to draw owls and then we made them all our own, by adding our own special touches. We met our new phys-ed teacher, Ms. Quilley, and learned the game 'elves, wizards and giants." We also met Ms. McArthur (our room 73 teacher) and Ms. Thomas (our buddy room teacher) and Ms. McBride (our music teacher).

Some other things that we did this week:  started writing stories for the circle of courage; set up and worked in our daily 5 groups; solved 'eye opener' riddle and number problems first thing in the mornings; completed math tasks with numbers of the day; completed problem solving math art and created our own math word problems. We used popsicle sticks to help us organize the set up of our classroom (bins/coats/chores).  We learned about DEAR (drop everything and read) and enjoyed it each day for fifteen minutes after lunch. There are oodles of other little things that filled our days so feel free to comment with some questions and we'll do our best to answer.

We also wanted to send out a huge thank you to council for providing us with that wonderful snack yesterday.  It was so kind of the volunteers to offer up their time and add a little something special to our day!

Lastly, we would like to ask any family members who are able to volunteer for our Terry Fox run, this September 29th, to let Mrs. McArthur and/or the office know.

Thank you for reading our first post/TWAS; have a great weekend,

Sincerely,

Room 73

(Thank you everyone who was able to get the first group of forms back so quickly; one more went home today for in-line skating)
